Esca Cueva is an innovative restaurant that redefines the traditional dining experience, creating a space intimately connected to nature while blurring the boundaries between architecture and organic forms. Drawing inspiration from the intricate beauty of the female body and contours of the earth, Cueva translates organic shapes and curves into a rationalised design that fosters a unique and inviting atmosphere.
The final design achieves a holistic effect, seamlessly blending and transforming the restaurant’s previously rigid Cartesian layout. It carefully facilitates the relationship between users and their surroundings, with organic forms evoking visual peace through depressions, creases, and strategically placed artificial lighting. The feeling of disappearing into a modernist grotto — ‘cueva’ meaning cave in Latin — while simultaneously offering sweeping views of Cairo, sets the space apart.
Digital concepts
Conceptualised by Egyptian architect Mohamed Badie, founder of Cairo-based Badie Architects, the undulating curvature of the design was made possible by advanced 3D technology software, which accurately captured the organic forms. Drawing inspiration from the natural world — a concept prevalent in most Esca projects — its textures are reminiscent of the natural weathering of rocks. This digital wizardry ultimately paved the way for traditional craftsmanship, with local artisans creating a steel infrastructure that was then covered in stucco.
A sculpted space
Awarded the Best Restaurant Design in Africa and the Middle East by the Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, the project captures attention and provides an experience that transcends the simple act of enjoying a meal. Witnessing guests’ initial reactions upon entering and observing how the design demonstrably alters their behaviour — disconnecting them from the outside world and evoking their curiosity in all senses — is truly captivating. It embodies originality and powerfully showcases the transformative potential of architecture on human behaviour and physical experience.
Through constant communication and a deep understanding of material limitations, the project prioritised a smooth transition from design to construction. By anticipating challenges, Badie Architects minimised the need for major adjustments on-site, creating what is undoubtedly one of Cairo’s most sought-after dining venues.
