Contemporary new look for The Lancaster neighbourhood centre underway
The Lancaster neighbourhood centre in Craighall Park, which is located on a prominent site on Jan Smuts Avenue in Johannesburg, is undergoing a refurbishment designed by MDS Architecture.
The well-established four-storey centre offers convenient shopping in a residential area. Construction began in February 2022 and the project is set to be completed by the end of July 2022.
Chad Sampson, partner at MDS Architecture, says the centre will be transformed into a contemporary neighbourhood centre. “The façade is getting a facelift which opens it up to Jan Smuts Avenue, creating a visual connection to the busy road.”
The owners of The Lancaster, Fieldspace Property Group, wanted to freshen up the centre while retaining the convenience and charm of the shopping centre.
The design creates a contemporary aesthetic. It incorporates copper cladding and vintage elements such as black, grey and orange colours on the exterior. Branding also has a vintage feel on all signage. Greenery along the open areas facing the street softens the building and entices visitors.
