This category is all about the practice of reimagining an existing space into something spectacular and adapting to the future needs of the user (while in some instances nodding to the past). And boy, these projects did not disappoint! Each shortlisted submission redefines the idea of a residential refurb and provides us with a clear meaning: a space that shapes our day-to-day lives and refuses to go unnoticed. Studio BHD for Woodsprings House: Woodsprings House exemplifies a blend of historical preservation and modern design. Studio BHD masterfully steered the transition between old and new while making them contrast effectively. The exterior serves as a connective element, beautifully linking the heritage structure with the garden, and integrates effortlessly with the leady suburb of Newlands, Cape Town.

ARRCC for Glen Villa: ARRCC has given new life to a contemporary Cape Town home on a beautiful, treed site at the foot of Table Mountain. ARRCC’s additions fuse seamlessly with the existing architecture, originally designed by architect Antonio Zaninovic, while simultaneously enhancing a powerful connection with the surrounding landscape and magnificent city views.

Morris & Co for House 33: Originally designed by the firm in 2008, Morris & Co were asked to revisit this Johannesburg home in 2022. With an ambition to reimagine the next chapter beyond that of a young family, the project welcomes a sophisticated environment, with enhanced connections to the garden and outdoor entertainment areas.

ATTIK Design for Sunset House: Bathed in natural light, this Llandudno renovation seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a serene and inviting haven.  Each space encourages family interaction, blending functionality with natural elements to create a nurturing retreat that feels like an extension of the landscape.

KA. Architecture and Design Studio for The Long House: The long linear plan gave the project its name, originally designed in the 1980s. The new additional were made in keeping with the lines and planes of the existing house. This renovation artfully and intentionally demonstrates how a good design can be successfully updated, while considerate of the original design and intentions of the build.

Solvation Architects for Heritage House @ 32 Van der Stel: The project introduces contemporary detailing and materials while respecting the existing building’s form, angles, and height, with new additions strategically placed at the sides and back to preserve the garden space at the front. Alterations were designed to enhance the original character and scale, ensuring that new elements complement rather than overpower the old structure.
